Your smile is one of the first things that people notice about you and it’s one of the features that you yourself will spend a lot of time looking at. For better or worse, your smile is one of the anchor points of your face and nothing can destroy your confidence like a smile that isn’t as white as you’d like. Maybe you’ve tried a handful of whitening toothpastes and at-home whitening kits to try to restore your teeth to a lighter shade with mixed results, or maybe you haven’t done anything about the color of your teeth yet. Either way, at Dr. Nahel Yanni’s East Brunswick Dental Clinic, we can help you get the smile you’ve always wanted with teeth whitening services that will restore your teeth to the brilliant pearly white you’ve long envisioned! Contact us for an appointment today and read on to find out what causes tooth staining and how teeth whitening works.

How Do Teeth Get Stained?

There are three main kinds of teeth staining that can occur, each with their own set of causes:

Intrinsic Staining: Intrinsic staining is when the dentin (inner part of the tooth) takes on a yellowish tint or darkens and is visible through the enamel. Intrinsic staining is caused by a number of factors including exposure to tetracycline antibiotics in utero or at a young age, as well as damage to developing teeth.

Extrinsic Staining: Extrinsic staining is staining of the outer part of a tooth caused by red wines, coffee, sodas, other kinds of food and drink, and smoking.

Age-based Staining: As we get older, a combination of extrinsic and intrinsic staining take a toll on our teeth, especially when combined with a lifetime of small tooth injuries like chips and the wearing away of enamel as we age.

What Does Tooth Whitening Do?

When you decide to get your teeth whitened, the dentist will apply a special bleaching agent to your teeth that will help to remove extrinsic stains. The teeth whitening solutions at our dentist office will always offer much more thorough and quick whitening than you’ll be able to get out of a system that you get from the drug store. Don’t waste your time and money trying to get good results from at-home kits. You’ll spend weeks or months trying to get close to what the dentist can do in less than an hour.

Some Ways to Prevent Tooth Staining

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Brushing helps remove residue from food and drink that can stain your teeth. Brushing with a whitening toothpaste will also help your teeth look great!
  • Don’t smoke or chew tobacco. Tobacco stains your teeth and can lead to cancer.
  • Avoid staining foods, and rinse your mouth with water after eating or drinking staining foods. Minimizing staining foods means your teeth will look better for longer.
