In our last blog entry we covered five reasons that you should see a dentist as soon as possible. These reasons ranged from headaches to tooth sensitivity and were often indications of problems that could become severe if left untreated for long. In this blog we will go over four more reasons to see a dentist soon. If you need a dentist now, contact us at Dr. Nahel Yanni’s dental office. We can offer treatment for almost any dental ailment and we make sure our patients are comfortable in our state-of-the-art facility.
4. See the Dentist if Your Tooth Has Been Knocked Out of Position
Also known as subluxation, a tooth can be twisted or knocked out of position in many different ways. If you fell or were involved in an accident where you hit your mouth on a hard surface, one or more of your teeth might have twisted slightly within their socket. You might be able to tell that this has occurred based on the way it looks, because it is causing you discomfort, or because you can tell that it isn’t aligning correctly when your mouth is closed or when you try to chew. While you can try to very gently move it back to where it should be, it’s a better idea to just call a dentist. At Dr. Yanni’s office here in East Brunswick, we will be able to safely examine a turned tooth and determine the best course of action to fix it.
3. See the Dentist if You Have a Broken or Chipped Tooth
A tooth can chip or break for a number of reasons, including biting down on a hard food or during an accident. While a chipped tooth might not hurt, it is a good idea to have a dentist examine your tooth to make sure that it is not more deeply damaged. A chip isn’t good for your tooth because it exposes a part of the tooth that isn’t protected by enamel and because it creates an edge that can continue to chip off. Chipped teeth can prevent you from eating certain healthful foods and can also damage your gums and tongue due to their sharp edges. A broken tooth carries many of the same problems, but are usually even more likely to cause tooth issues quickly.
2. Visit a Dentist if You Have Lost a Tooth
If a tooth has fallen out of your mouth for seemingly no reason, it’s a good idea to come to the dentist as soon as you can. A dentist will be able to examine not just the tooth but the part of the jaw that it came from and tell you if you are suffering from one of several diseases or infections of the mouth that can cause tooth or bone loss. If you are suffering from bone loss due to periodontitis you may need surgery to stop the spread of this infection and to prevent further bone loss.
