10. Call the Dentist if You Have Inflamed Gums

Inflamed gums can be a sign of several problems in your mouth. At the less severe end of the spectrum is gingivitis (gum disease). Gingivitis is caused by a buildup of plaque that, over time, can start to inflame the gums. You might notice that your gums are inflamed because they are reddish, swollen, sensitive, or bleeding slightly. Gingivitis can be easily treated with a good dental cleaning and can be prevented through regular brushing and flossing.

A more severe possibility of inflamed gums is periodontitis. Periodontitis is an actual infection of the gums that wears down the bone of your jaw by allowing the the bacteria in your mouth to eat away at the bone that supports your teeth. It can start with sore and bleeding gums and lead to loose, and eventually lost, teeth.

9. Call the Dentist if You Have Tooth Pain

Tooth pain can be tricky because sometimes we know exactly what caused it and we know that it can go away fairly quickly. However, if you are experiencing tooth pain that doesn’t have an immediate cause or that keeps getting worse, call us right away. There are many causes of tooth pain and a lot of them can be severe and in need of quick treatment to prevent long-term damage. If you’re experiencing tooth pain, call us right now.

8. Call the Dentist if You Have Over-Sensitivity to Hot and Cold

If you have noticed your teeth getting more and more sensitive to cold or hot liquids, this could be a sign of tooth decay. If you don’t get it checked out, a cavity could form or get worse. Having a cavity filled is no fun, but left untreated a cavity could eat through a large portion of your tooth and eventually reach the nerve where you would need a root canal to take care of it.

7. Call the Dentist if You Have Dry Mouth

If you’ve noticed that your mouth has been getting dry for no reason, give us a call. A dry mouth can be an indication of something being out of balance within your mouth, and it will also contribute to bad breath. Remember, dry mouth can sometimes be caused by certain prescription medications, and your mouth will get drier as you get older.

6. Call the Dentist if You Have Jaw Pain

If your jaw has been causing you pain, is stiff and sore, clicks, or is giving you headaches, it’s a good idea to see a dentist. This pain can be caused by a number of factors, but most common is TMD (temporomandibular joint disorders). The temporomandibular joint is the joint of the jaw and it can become inflamed or damaged over time due to a wide variety of causes. Seeing a dentist if you’re experiencing TMJ pain is a good idea because they can help you develop a plan of action about how to reduce your pain.

5. Call the Dentist if You Have Headaches

If you wake up with a headache or find your head pounding after a long day of work, you might be grinding your teeth. Not only can teeth grinding hurt your teeth, it can also tense up muscles and joints which can lead to headaches. A dentist can help you figure out why you are grinding your teeth and help you find ways to stop.

As you can see, there are many reasons why you might have problems with your teeth that could require you to see a dentist. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, or you just want a dental checkup, teeth-cleaning, or teeth-whitening, call Dr. Nahel Yanni today. Our dental clinic is here to help you with all of your dental needs!
